Ganesh Chaturthi Festival – Celebration in India

Ganesh Chaturthi is an Indian festival that celebrates the arrival of the Hindu god Ganesh to the earth from Kailash Parvat (Kangrinboqe Peak). It is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the fourth day in the month of Bhadrapada (which usually falls in August-September) is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. The festival lasts 11 days and is celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm. This festival is celebrated throughout India, especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa.

What is Ganesh Chaturthi?

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the fourth day in the month of Bhadrapada (which usually falls in August-September) is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. Four main rituals are celebrated during this festival, including Pranapratishhtha, Shhodashopachara, Uttarpuja, and Ganpati Visarjan.

The first day of the festival started with welcoming Lord Ganesha. Idols of lord Ganesha are placed in colourfully decorated pandals (temporary stage) with flowers, garlands, and lights. Then the worship of god started with Pranapratishhtha, invoking life in the idol. Then followed by Shhodashopachara, which means people offer prayer to the lord Ganesh in 16 different ways, and chant mantras like Ganapati Atharvasirsha. People offer Modak (Sweet Dumpling consisting of a mixture of jaggery and coconut) to lord Ganesh, as this is favourite dish of lord.

On the festival’s last day, the ritual Uttarpuja takes place, which means bidding farewell to Lord Ganesh with deep respect. Then idol of lord Ganesha is immersed in the nearest body of water like a lake, river, or sea. This ritual is called as Ganpati Visarjan.

History

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival has been celebrated since the era of Great Maratha King Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (founder of the Maratha Empire). In the 18th century, Peshwa started this as a public festival, as Peshwa were devotees of Lord Ganesh. But in British Raj, the Ganesh festival lost state support due to many restrictions and became a private family celebration in Maharashtra. In 1893, Indian freedom fighter Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Lokmanya Tilak) converted this private festival into a public festival.
